26 companies operating in Armenia’s mining industry damage region’s ecology

“There are 26 companies operating in the field of mining industry in Armenia, and their work damages the ecology of Azerbaijan and the region,’ said co-founder of Environmental Protection First (EPF) Coalition Sabit Baghirov at today’s briefing, APA reports.

He said that harmful substances flow with the rivers flowing through the territory of Armenia and flowing into Araz, Bargushad and Okchuchay, thereby passing through the territory of Azerbaijan: “First of all, the regulation of this issue should be observed within the framework of international conventions. Although Azerbaijan joined these conventions, Armenia did not. Because signing this document imposes a number of obligations related to environmental safety on Armenia. I assume that after the signing of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, documents related to this should also be signed between both states and the responsibility of 26 companies operating in the mining field in Armenia should be increased. Another direction is to increa
se the role of civil societies in the issue of environmental security. Then, it consists of by making an official appeal to the countries to which the foreign companies operating in Armenia belong and ensuring the governments to put pressure on these enterprises in the environmental field.”
