Noumea: Azerbaijan’s flag was hoisted once again in New Caledonia’s capital, Noumea, marking a significant moment of solidarity during the first congress of the International Front of Decolonization, held on January 23-24. The congress brought together various stakeholders including parliamentarians, political party leaders, non-governmental organization heads, and leaders of social movements advocating for the independence of regions like New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, and Corsica.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the event was attended by representatives from multiple regions struggling for decolonization. Despite visa issues preventing members of the Baku Initiative Group from attending in person, they participated online. Abbas Abbasov, Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group, addressed the congress in a video message. He reiterated Azerbaijan’s support, echoing President Ilham Aliyev’s condemnation of the injustices faced by the Kanak people.
In recognition of Azerbaijan’s support, the Kanak people raised the Azerbaijani flag in Noumea. The congress also highlighted the establishment of the International Front of Decolonization in Baku in July 2024, an initiative supported by the Baku Initiative Group, aiming to unite the remaining French colonies in their quest for independence.
