Baku: Disinformation is creating significant hurdles in the global advertising market, particularly in the context of climate change, a representative from the Conscious Advertising Network highlighted during a recent press conference. Alex Morrey pointed out that the forecasted revenue for the global advertising market is expected to surpass 1 trillion dollars by 2025, yet this figure could have been even higher if not for the widespread dissemination of disinformation and fake social media profiles.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Morrey emphasized that the spread of disinformation has led to a decline in trust within the advertising market. He cited the example of over 44,000 websites in the United States experiencing a loss of 120 billion dollars due to advertising fraud. The issue is particularly acute in the field of climate change, where disinformation has further eroded confidence in the global advertising market. This lack of trust has, in turn, impacted freedom of speech.
Morrey suggested th
at to counteract these challenges, individual countries should focus on promoting climate journalism. He expressed hope that significant progress on this issue could be achieved by the COP in 2030. Additionally, he noted that disinformation is casting a shadow over climate actions and UNESCO’s recommendations, raising concerns about the overall information ecosystem. To address these issues, Morrey called for governments to implement serious and effective measures to ensure transparency in the advertising sector.
