OMV Considers Gas Transit from Azerbaijan to EU via Ukraine

Vienna: Europe needs gas supplies and cannot rule out the prospect of transit of blue fuel from Azerbaijan through the territory of Ukraine, Alfred Stern, Chairman of the Executive Board and Chief Executive Officer of OMV AG said, APA-Economics reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Alfred Stern emphasized the necessity to diversify energy sources. He stated, “We must increase the supply of all energy carriers, including gas. We cannot exclude anything. I would never put myself at the disposal of one supplier in the future. The rest is a political question,” when asked about his support for gas transit from Azerbaijan through Ukraine.

It is important to recall that the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to Europe was completely suspended on January 1, following Kyiv’s decision not to extend the contract. This development has heightened the urgency for Europe to explore alternative gas supply routes.

Additionally, Azerbaijani gas has been transported to Europe via the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) since December 31, 2020, marking a significant step in diversifying Europe’s energy sources.
